Chester Races


Chester Racecourse, known as the Roodee, is the oldest racecourse in Britain with the first recorded race at the  held on February 9th 1539.  The course itself  is a flat course just over 1 mile long which is raced anti-clockwise.

Meets are  held from May – September starting with a three day May Festival followed by another 12 days/ evenings of racing throughout the summer totalling 15 race days /evenings during the season. A family fun day is held in August where the concourse is opened up to allow picnics.

The Roodee also has its own restaurant, Restaurant 1539 and hosts the annual Chester music festival Chester Rocks as well as Polo competitions. It is also a well known wedding and conference venue, with a Holiday Inn next door and ample parking provided at the venue. It has recently been granted planning permission to build a family friendly restaurant ‘The White Horse’ on the parade ring enclosure, which will open in Spring 2013. The Roodee is only a short walk from the city centres bars, restaurants and clubs.
